The number of full-time workers in Macau's gaming sector fell 0.8% year-on-year to 51,771 in the fourth quarter of 2023, but average earnings excluding "non-regular remuneration" rose 6.8% year-on-year.

The results are released twice a year, according to the "Study on Workforce Demand and Wages" released by the Seoul Census Bureau on Wednesday.

The average monthly wage for full-time workers stood at 25,290 won ($3,139) in December, up 6.3 percent from a year earlier, according to the latest survey.

Macau casinos have been recovering since early 2023 with the end of COVID-19-related restrictions in mainland China, Hong Kong and Macau.

Average gaming employee revenue in the last quarter of 2023 was up 2.6% compared to average pay MOP24,640 in the fourth quarter of 2019, before the pandemic began in early 2020.

Official data shows Macau gaming industry has a total of 58,225 full-time employees in the last quarter of 2019. This represents a 12.5% increase in the three months to December 31, 2023.

Macau employed 23,359 table game dealers as of the fourth quarter of last year, down 362 from a year earlier. Their average sales rose 5.4% year-over-year to MOP20,870, but were down 1.0% from the last quarter of 2019.

The quarterly survey does not include people working for VIP gambling junket promoters or junket colleagues.

"The gradual recovery of the economy has increased the demand for manpower [in the gaming sector]," the secretariat noted.

In the fourth quarter of 2023, there were 400 vacancies in the gaming sector, up 387 year-over-year.
