A Calgary woman recently complained about PlayAlberta, Alberta's only regulatory website that refused to pay off the property of her deceased stepfather. Samantha Craig sought help from media outlets to share stories about how the regulated iGaming platform dragged its feet before finally paying off his stepfather's account.
Ms. Craig began dealing with her stepfather's real estate and gambling site back in August 2022, a month after her father, Brian Winter, died. He was a former Calgary Airport White Hat volunteer, retired business instructor at SAIT, and a keen financial man who cleaned up everything. However, it took months to face Play Alberta.
In a recent interview, Mr. Craig explained that it took several months for Mr. Winter to pay C$219 in his play account on the online platform. She explained that everything went smoothly except for the government gambling agency. Mr. Craig said the problem was resolved in the middle of the month.
In addition, she explained that she had heard almost nothing from the website regarding Mr. Winter's game funding. She believes she received only one call from the agency in five months, to tell her that there was no update on the issue on the platform. In response, a spokesperson for Play Alberta said the website could not comment on certain player situations.
Alberta Games, Liquor and Cannabis ensure all accounts and players are protected, it said in a statement. He explained that certain legal documents must be provided to fund an individual's property. The Crown recognised that this was a difficult time for the family but noted that it was important to ensure that a protection process was in place and applied.
However, Mr. Craig claimed to have provided all the necessary documents more than once, but that was not enough. Her problem was solved only after she filed a lawsuit or threatened to contact the media about it. She also presented an email from a website showing that her request was "regretfully with both departments for months."
She then received an apology from the Crown Corporation, some of which were not in full, but was told that the remaining funds were bonus plays and could not be redeemed. But she disagrees, and if she's already won the money fairly, she thinks there should be a way to cash in the name of the estate.
Albertans should know that PlayAlberta is the only regulated online gambling site in the state. Not long ago, AGLC promoted its platform through a campaign called "A Better Way To Play," which was inspired by scenes from classic horror movies. The aim of the initiative was to remind locals that PlayAlberta is the only legitimate iGaming site in Alberta and to engage more bettors.
