Macao casino company MGM China Holdings Ltd. held the launch of its "MGM 2049" residency show on Monday at MGM Theater at MGM Cotai Resort, which is set to debut in December this year.
2049 marks the 50th anniversary of Macau's handover from the Portuguese government to the Chinese government. This December marks the 25th anniversary of Macau's handover.
Pansy Ho Chiu King, chairman and executive director of MGM China, attended the MGM 2049 ceremony at the MGM Theater on Monday.
"Making MGM 2049 is ... "What is broad and pioneering is that it enables the participation of young people in Macau as we aspire to play a leading role in bringing original content, distinct standards, vitality and sustainability to Macau's entertainment sector."
Ho also announced the launch of the 'Global Recruitment Program' for MGM 2049 at the event.
According to the handout, the MGM 2049 project will "create more than 200 positions" for young people who are "interested in pursuing a career in the performing arts."
This will further solidify Macau's position as a "city of performing arts." The latter slogan was recently used to describe one of Macau's policy aspirations to diversify its economy beyond gambling-based tourism.
Chinese film director Zhang Yimou, described as the project's chief director, took the stage at the MGM 2049 launch ceremony on Monday.
Zhang's work includes the 1991 Chinese period drama "Listen to the Red Lantern," which was nominated for the 1992 American Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film.
He also directed 2004 'Darger House in Flying', which was nominated for the 2005 Oscar for best cinematography.
Other representatives of the creative industry who participated in the MGM 2049 project and took the stage for Monday's launch are Sang Jiga, who will become MGM's dance director. He is the resident choreographer for the City Contemporary Dance Company in Hong Kong.
Dominic Faraway, who will serve as MGM 2049's visual director, also attended Monday's gathering. He produced visual effects of pop performances such as Black Eyed Peas and Pixie Lott.
Bernard Prentice, who was described as MGM 2049's underwater photographer, also took the stage. His works include the feature film Kingsman: The Secret Service and the musical fantasy The Little Mermaid.
